Resolute in the act of their making, Dean Beletich’s drawings remind us of the intuitive logic that decides a work’s completeness, its ‘resolution’. The markings on these boards, more emphatic that those of his previous exhibition, speak to the speed of the work, as well as the music and rhythms that accompany each composition. There is nothing pre-determined here, but the feeling of one’s way into the shape and form of an oblique ending, characterised as much by the elemental, the gestures of various pressures that comprise it. Hamlet’s hamartia (as much as virtue) was his irresolution. Beletich’s resolve is his method, along with his refusal of the determinacy and closure of a work. Resolutions builds on a long interest for Beletich in mark and line, meditatively applied, and the rich possibility to which these might lead
